Everybody's Favourite Authoritarian

A song for a solemn day in our world's history.

Inauguration day in the United States...and seeing as we are living in bizarro world, an insurrectionist and convicted felon is heading back to the White House. So crazy. But the people voted for him again. It's very hard to understand… Why? Why would the electorate shoot themselves in the foot by voting for someone who is clearly not going to see to their best interests(unless you're one of the rich folks getting a big fat tax cut)?

I believe it is because people have lost faith in their institutions. It's not only the US, populist movements are springing up around the world...in Canada we have our own mini-Trump wannabe, who looks set to win the next election handily when it happens...at least that is the narrative the media has been consistently pushing for months.

Voters feel like they're not being heard, and I would say for the most part they are right. Income inequality keeps growing without any real policy solutions in sight. But do you think Trump and his buddy Elon Musk are looking out for the working class? That's laughable!

Economic disparity will grow under Trump's watch...and if Pierre Poilievre ends up PM in Canada, things will get immeasurably worse for lower income workers/people on the margins here as well. I hope it's a case of 'worse before it gets better' and after four years people will finally wake up to the changes that need to be made, because the world cannot carry on this way. The divide between rich and poor hasn't been this great since the early days of the 20th century. Back then it took the Great Depression and Two World Wars to wake people up! Let us please not do that again...

The one thing I can do is write songs about things that matter. Perhaps someone will listen...

This number is called "Everybody's Favourite Authoritarian". Share if you care. Let's all fight on for a better world.

Everybody’s Favourite Authoritarian - words and music by Tom Savage

Everybody’s favourite authoritarian
Burn all the books
Better yet….burn the librarian

Stack the deck
Into an insurmountable pyramid scheme

Democratically elected
Executioner of freedom
No need to demonize him
He’s a real life demon!

Here to tear it all down
as if inside a fever dream

Where nothing ever changes
And nothing ever grows
Except the stock exchanges
The oligarchy knows
They’re putting profit over people
Profit over good
They will profit off of anger
Like we always knew they could

She said we’re not going back
Well I guess that she was wrong
Because the future we are facing Is somewhere we don’t belong

No faith and no promise, or recognition of our history

The emergency is real

This world can't hold on

We'll fill the billionaire's coffers

Until everything is gone

We need a revolution to address this inequality

Where nothing ever changes
And nothing ever grows
Except the stock exchanges
The oligarchy knows
Putting profit over people
Profit over good
They will profit off of anger
Like we always knew they could

Break

Where nothing ever changes
And nothing ever grows
Except the stock exchanges
The oligarchy knows

Putting profit over people
Profit over good
They will profit off of anger
Like we always knew they would

Profit off of ignorance

profit off of shame

profit off of difference

profit off of pain

profit off of weapons

profit off of wars

and when your prosperity threatens

they won't give you what is yours
